Frances says his marriage certificate gives Margaret Jackson's address as Hamlet Annetland (where John Jackson is the landlord). In Pop's diary (my Grandfather - James Brown Low) for 9th Nov 1911 it says, "Silver wedding day. Such a lovely silver tea service from the Browns. Mr & Mrs Brown over in evening we all had a jolly time. 25 years seems quite an age when I hear them speak of all that has happened in that time. After supper speeches. Madge and I gave a silver rose-bowl. Very pretty one. Aunt M did not manage down." |

Narrative
I would really like to discover who his father was!
He lived at 3, Orrock Place, Jeanfield, Perth (stated on death note of John Jackson)
Margaret Low said he lived in a tenement in Scott Street Perth, then 28 Jeanfield Road Perth. I think this is the same house as 3 Orrock place.
Started in Butchers department in Coop near Scott Street Perth (?Silver street acording to my Dad). Got to be manager - worked 1879 - 1929
Went to middle Kirk, on river ?Tay Street.
Birth Certificate in name of James Low Duncan states 'illegitimate'. Mother Elisabeth Duncan, Domestic Servant, born in Letham. Address of birth Norriesland, Miller's Wynd, Dundee.
Can't yet find Elisabeth Duncan in 1861 census, but her sister Jane Duncan (also with illegitimate child) lived in Norriesland in 1861.
Marriage certificate says James Low, 47 High Street Perth, grocery salesman.
Father, James Low, farm overseer, deceased.
Mother Elizabeth Low m.s. Duncan
Death certificate says James Low (formerly Duncan) grocery manager. No mention of father, but mother is Elizabeth Duncan, linen weaver, deceased.

and a false one in Brechin.
Margaret Low feels that the father must have been rich as James had a good education, in spite of the very poor background of his mother. There was a suggestion that the father was a member of the family of Lindsay & Low - the greengrocers (later William Low). The chances are that the father was called James Low, and was the employer of Elisabeth Duncan in 1861.
John Low has the silver salver given to him to celebrate 50 years work at the Co-Op in Perth 1879-1929, so he must be in the 1881 census in Perth. I think this is him:
